About Cable = This program must be running on both PCs and a cable must be connected to a printer port at each PC. The required cable is most commonly called aá"LapLink Parallel Port Cable". Cables that do NOT work go by the names: Null Modem cable and Straight-Through cable. If the program consistantly cannot find a connection, you are probably using the wrong cable.``Any printer port (LPT 1, 2 or 3) is OK. The program will find which port has the cable.````Here is the pinout:``DB25M at each end. Unreferenced pins are not used.`` á2 áto á15`` á3 áto 13`` á4 áto 12`` á5 áto 10`` á6 áto 11`` 10 átoá 5`` 11 áto á6`` 12 áto á4`` 13 áto á3`` 15 áto á2`` 18 áto 18 (or 25 to 25)

Get Cable = To try FileVan, the fastest way to get the correct cable is to buy a "LapLink Parallel Port Cable" at your local computer store. But plan on later returning it because Rainy City's price is only $5 (with FileVan).``You can also order the cable separately from Rainy City at http://filevan.com/order.html for $9.95 + $5 shipping. You will receive credit for $4.95 if you later purchase the program.
lblSyncDefined = Synchronize makes the selected folders on each PC identical by using the following rules...`` 1) Newest file overwrites oldest file (either direction).`` 2) If a file exists in the folder on only one PC, it is copied to the other PC's folder.````Note that only folders can be synchronized - individual files cannot be selected.````Caution - Make sure that the Time Zone settings are the same on`` both PCs to prevent older files from overwriting newer files.

Not Linked = If you are sure you have the correct cable:`` 1) Make sure the printer ports are working on both PCs. A good test is whether a printer work at each connector.`` 2) On some PCs, the bi-directional property of the parallel port needs to be disabled using CMOS settings or other provided means.`` 3) The CMOS parallel port mode should be ideally set to any of these:`` a) Normal`` b) Standard`` c) Output Only`` d) SPP`` e) AT````If you have more than one parallel port, try moving the cable to other connectors. Some add-on parallel ports are for printers only and will not work for file transfer.

zLFNs = If the other PC is running FileVan For DOS, files with Long File Names are transferred to it as their short name equivalents (called aliases).
zMethod = FileVan uses a high-speed 2-way communications protocol that works through a PC's parallel (printer) port. Most PCs allow up to 3 ports, designated as LPT1, LPT2 and LPT3. FileVan will automatically sense and use the port that has the cable attached.
zTransApps = IMPORTANT PRECAUTIONS WHEN TRANSFERRING APPLICATIONS!``File transfer programs are intended to transfer work files and data files. Transferring large applications (such as Microsoft Office) and operating systems (such as Windows 98) usually won't work because the files you see may not be all of them. You may not know where all the support files are. You will miss system registry settings, entries on the Start menu, etc. And since many apps install in ways that are hardware dependent, they may not work after transfer to a PC with a different hardware mix. The application or operating system may appear to be corrupted when it is not. Always try first to use the original disks or CD-ROMS except in the case of very simple applications. Then use a file transfer product such as ours to transfer data files and work files.
zTransSysFiles = IMPORTANT PRECAUTIONS WHEN TRANSFERRING SYSTEM-CRITICAL FILES!``File Transfer Utilities (this and any other brand) will transfer all files including those critical to system operation. If transferring system-critical files to another PC, that PC may hang during the transfer as its own system-critical files are overwritten. If you are not able to reboot, you may need to reinstall DOS and/or Windows. If you need to temporarily transfer such files to another PC, such as when upgrading your hard drive, be sure to specify destination folders that will not cause overwriting of its system-critical files. Such files are usually found in the root directory, Windows folder, the Windows\System folder and the DOS folder, but may be found in many other places as well. The power you have with FileVan is also the power to do serious temporary damage to your operating system.
